Althea’s Swedish great grandfather Charles Johnson ( Carl Johanneson) made the box in Wellington as a 21st birthday present for his daughter Jessie in 1901. It’s a fine example of marquetry and his skill as a cabinet maker. A family heirloom handed down to the eldest daughter of each generation. Althea treasures this treasure.
Gwen’s father, who lived all of his life in NZ, made this garage for her and Robert’s eldest son, Peter, who was born in 1963. Three generations of children have played happily with it and it is currently being enjoyed by Gwen’s great grandchildren. Hopefully it will see even further generations! (Somewhat different to today’s plastic toys.)
Jenny’s late husband’s grandfather, Dr Samuel Smullian, hand-copied this book on Tumours in the late 1800s in England. 70 years later it was bound by Jenny’s father-in-law, Dr Harry Epstein, in South Africa. The other book of recipes, was bound in the colour of Jenny’s choice – and gilded for her!
Jo’s husband’s maternal and paternal Grandfathers made this heron ornament and picture frame respectively. The picture frame was made with timber off the wreck of the Wairarapa in 1894.
Marcia’s father, amongst many other things, made a rocking horse, a few caravans and many Easter buns and cakes with specialty icing.
And, finally, Mary’s Grandfather made this chair ‘specially for her, with her name engraved on it.
